Etsy has rolled out key platform policy changes to preserve the authenticity of its handmade marketplace. As of June 10, 2025, Etsy clarified that 3D-printed and digitally designed items must be based on the seller’s own original design to qualify as handmade. This update has led to the removal of numerous listings that relied on generic, mass-produced digital templates or third-party models.
Additionally, starting June 5, 2025, Etsy made identity verification mandatory for all sellers. Every shop owner must now upload valid government-issued identification to continue accessing and operating their accounts. Failure to comply results in account suspension or payout delays.
To stay competitive, sellers must also adapt to Etsy’s evolving search algorithm, which now prioritizes mobile browsing experience, visual quality, and real buyer behavior signals like favorites, dwell time, and repeat views. Simply using strong keywords is no longer enough to guarantee visibility.
Etsy has also shifted its marketing focus, reducing TV ads in favor of personalized, data-driven ads across search engines and social media.
Action Tip: Audit your listings for originality, complete identity verification, and focus on mobile-friendly images and personalized marketing.
